San Miguel de Allende - Voted best city in the world

A perennial winner of Travel + Leisure’s voting for “Best City in the World'“ (a winner in 2021, 2022 & 2024), the charming town of San Miguel de Allende is an absolute gem to visit.

Nestled in the heart of Mexico’s central highlands, San Miguel de Allende is a picturesque city that perfectly blends old-world charm with modern luxury. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it’s renowned for its well-preserved colonial architecture, vibrant art scene, and rich cultural history. Whether you're looking for a romantic getaway or a cultural retreat, this city offers a unique blend of Mexican tradition and cosmopolitan elegance. And for travelers seeking to indulge in a bit of luxury, San Miguel has an impressive array of upscale accommodations that elevate the experience.

My travels took me to this town as I had a conference just outside Cancun so I had an opportunity to spend 3 days there - it has been a city on my wish list for so long. The city is well connected as there are daily multiple flights from Dallas & Houston to either Queretaro (QRO) or Bajío/Leon (BJX) and then a 75 minute transfer from either one. I personally departed PHL at 6:30 am and flew United through Houston into Queretaro, arriving in San Miguel by 12:30p

San Miguel de Allende is bursting with cultural and historical sites. The iconic Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, with its dramatic pink neo-Gothic facade, is the centerpiece of the city’s historic plaza and one of the most photographed landmarks in Mexico. Wandering through the cobblestone streets, visitors can explore beautifully preserved colonial buildings, vibrant markets, and an eclectic mix of galleries showcasing local and international art. The Fabrica La Aurora, a former textile factory turned arts and design center, is a must-see for art lovers, offering a blend of modern art and traditional Mexican craftsmanship.

San Miguel’s luxury hotels offer the ultimate escape. The hotel I stayed in was the incredibly charming, 6 room La Valise San Miguel de Allende. Each room is offers a unique design channeling Mexican heritage - whether it’s Mayan / Aztech architecture or Spanish Colonial heritgage, it’s a great hotel for a romantic getaway. Another gem is the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, a lavish estate-style property featuring colonial-style architecture, expansive gardens, and a rooftop tapas bar with panoramic views of the city. Guests here can unwind in spacious suites, enjoy a refreshing dip in the rooftop pool, or relax at the Sense Spa, making it an unforgettable stay. Finally, the Belmond Casa de Sierra Nevada, a collection of restored colonial mansions located in the heart of the city. This hotel is an oasis of elegance, offering a combination of intimate, tranquil courtyards and beautifully appointed rooms that feature original colonial touches, such as wooden beams and hand-painted tiles.

All three hotels are a preferred partner of Seek & Explore and by booking through me, you’ll receive complimentary breakfast, room upgrade, $100 hotel credit, and VIP treatment.

A visit to San Miguel would not be complete without indulging in its culinary delights. The city’s dining scene is sophisticated and diverse, ranging from upscale fine dining to local street food. Many luxury hotels boast award-winning restaurants, but beyond the hotels, you'll find gems like Aperi, where creative seasonal dishes are expertly paired with Mexican wines. For a more traditional experience, head to El Pegaso, where you can savor authentic Mexican dishes in a cozy, colorful setting. Exploring the city’s culinary offerings is as much a part of the journey as visiting its historic sites.

San Miguel de Allende isn't just about its colonial charm and luxury hotels—it’s also becoming a notable destination for wine enthusiasts, thanks to the growing presence of vineyards in the surrounding area. The semi-arid climate and high altitude of central Mexico provide ideal conditions for wine production, and several boutique wineries near San Miguel have been making a name for themselves with exceptional Mexican wines.

One of the most renowned is Viñedos San Lucas, a beautiful vineyard that combines winemaking with a luxury experience. Just a short drive from the city, this estate offers not only wine tastings but also olive oil and lavender products from their own farms. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of the vineyards, followed by tastings of their elegant red blends, whites, and rosés, often accompanied by artisanal cheeses and local charcuterie. For those wanting to make a day of it, they also features a top-tier restaurant

With its luxurious accommodations, rich history, and vibrant cultural scene, San Miguel de Allende offers something for every traveler. Whether you’re lounging in a lavish hotel, admiring the local art, or soaking up the city’s romantic ambiance, a visit to San Miguel de Allende promises a memorable and indulgent experience.

San Miguel de Allende lived up to the hype…and more! If you’re looking for a long weekend getaway that feels world apart or you’re bored of the beach, I cannot recommend this city any more. Safe, accessible, charming, and oozes romance, put this top city in the world on your travel list!
